An Excellent Overview of Visco Elastic Beds

Way back in the 1970′s, NASA was looking for a way to help make launches easier on the bodies of their astronaut crews. NASA’s scientists were trying to produce a kind of foam padding that would give soft support to the body and would also keep its shape. And so, visco elastic memory foam was born. The unique properties of this foam allowed for uniform distribution of weight and the ability to easily adapt to body position changes. After several years of research and development, TempurPedic introduced the first memory foam beds to the public in the early 90′s.

Although memory foam beds are soft to the touch, it really cannot be categorized as a soft mattress. Your weight is evenly distributed over the sleeping surface which reduces pressure points. The advantage of visco foam mattresses over inner spring beds is that they do not create pressure points that leave you tossing and turning the whole night.

An additional nice advantage of memory foam beds is that motion transfer is limited so that your movement won’t disturb your significant other. It is of course a lot easier to get good sleep if you are not bothered by unwanted disturbances.

It’s important to note that good quality memory foam beds will not require a box-spring under them for additional support. While you can certainly order a platform base to raise the height of the bed, it’s worth noting that the mattress should feel just as good laying on an even, concrete surface.
