Safety Tips For Riding Quad Bikes

People look for thrills in different ways and one of these includes riding ATVs or quad bikes. While they are often used on farms as work horses they can also be used for fun. ATVs are those 4 wheel bikes you usually see on TV being used to race through sand dunes and different kinds of terrain. As the name suggests, they can be used anywhere since they are All Terrain Vehicles.

Although quad bikes can be a lot of fun they can also be dangerous if the rider does not take proper care riding and maintaining them. As you are probably aware, there are a lot of accidents posted in local newspapers and reported on the television that involve motorcycles, and ATVs are included, although ATVs are a lot safer since they have 4 wheels instead of 2. If you are planning to buy an ATV in the near future then take note of the following so as to improve your safety while riding.

Firstly, when you buy one make sure that it possesses all the necessary features and documents to make it “road legal” if you are planning to use it in your neighborhood.

You may find this a bit surprising but there are online stores these days that offer different kinds of quads. Most of these sites have quads for adults as well as for kids. They also provide different kinds of accessories and clothing for you to select from. An example of such a site is the Auto Barn Quads which has different models for different purposes.

Secondly check your front and rear brakes. To test the front brakes you need to pull its lever which is usually found on the right hand side of the handle bars. Upon pulling it, it should only move towards the handle bar at around a maximum distance of 75 percent from its previous position. This indicates that the cable brake is in good shape and not over stretched.

After this you should also check on the rear brake by following the same procedure. Take note that the lever for the rear brake is usually found on the left hand side of the handle bar. If your bike is of the newer kind, most likely you will have a foot pedal to control your rear brake. If this is the case test it by pressing on the foot lever. An indication that is it in good shapes is that it does not travel any more than 45 degrees from the released position.

Finally, you should also check on the levels of oil, water, coolant, petrol, as well as the break fluids before moving. These are the normal checks you should do regularly for any vehicle, but it is all the more important to check them on off-road or all-terrain vehicles because rough terrain especially can take its toll on your parts and cause wear and tear. Quad bikes are not considered dangerous as long as its operators are careful and responsible enough to check all necessary things before driving them.
